What's Happening?

On October 7, 2026, Norfolk Southern announced it will suspend rail operations in the Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, areas ahead of Tropical Storm Isaias. Operations will wind down beginning Friday afternoon, October 9, with a full shutdown expected by Friday evening.

The railroad is moving railcars, locomotives and equipment out of vulnerable yards. It expects the greatest impact around Mobile, where storm surge and high winds could affect operations.

Impact on Your Shipments

Rail freight moving through the Gulf Coast should expect delays, service interruptions and temporary restrictions during the storm and the recovery period. This includes intermodal containers and railcars routed via Mobile or New Orleans, as well as traffic interchanged with connecting railroads.

Port terminals and regional trucking may also be affected, and post-storm backlogs could extend transit times after service resumes.

Falcon’s Approach

Falcon can identify which of your shipments are routed through the affected corridor, follow carrier and port updates, and keep you informed as service is restored. For time-sensitive cargo, the team can assess alternatives such as other Gulf or Atlantic gateways or truck moves. It can also help plan the safe staging of project and breakbulk cargo around the storm.
