In international trade, clarity is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. With goods passing through multiple hands, borders, and modes of transport, every step of the shipping process carries a risk of miscommunication.

In international trade, clarity is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. With goods passing through multiple hands, borders, and modes of transport, every step of the shipping process carries a risk of miscommunication. This is where Incoterms® 2020 come into play. Developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Incoterms are a standardized set of 11 rules designed to define the roles, costs, and risks between buyers and sellers in cross-border transactions. The most recent update was released in September 2019 and became effective on January 1, 2020.

The core purpose of Incoterms is simple: they tell each party who is responsible for what. Who arranges transport? Who pays for insurance? Who handles customs paperwork? And most critically, when does risk transfer from the seller to the buyer? These terms provide a common language that helps prevent costly assumptions and legal ambiguity in international contracts.

What Incoterms® 2020 Cover

  • Cost responsibilities: Who pays for transport, insurance, packaging, and duties
  • Risk transfer: When liability for loss or damage shifts from seller to buyer
  • Logistics duties: Who arranges transport, loading, unloading, and customs clearance
  • Mode-specific application: Some terms apply to all transport modes; others only to sea and inland waterway
  • Defined delivery points: Each term includes a named location where risk and cost responsibilities shift
