About this project

A leading Chinese transportation company partnered with Falcon International to coordinate the transportation of 31 oversized wind turbine component bundles from Dalian, China, to Michigan, USA. The project required far more than simply arranging ocean freight. Once the cargo arrived in New York, Falcon had a narrow delivery window to unload, transload, and coordinate oversized trucking while avoiding costly detention charges. Through careful planning and experienced project management, every component was delivered safely, on schedule, and exactly according to the consignee’s requested delivery sequence.

The Story behind
the move

The customer specializes in large-scale transportation projects and regularly manages oversized industrial cargo worldwide. For this shipment, they required a logistics partner capable of coordinating both international ocean transportation and complex inland delivery in the United States.

Rather than searching for the lowest-cost provider, the customer prioritized proven execution. The shipment involved multiple oversized units, tight delivery requirements, and highly coordinated handling at the Port of New York, conditions where experience makes all the difference.

Falcon was recommended by another international logistics partner following similar successful project cargo operations, giving the customer confidence that the shipment would be managed correctly from beginning to end.

The Challenges Faced
& Overcame

Although the ocean voyage itself was straightforward, the real complexity began once the cargo reached New York.

Eight flat rack containers carrying 31 oversized wind turbine component bundles had to be discharged, transloaded, and dispatched within an extremely limited timeframe. Any delay would have resulted in expensive detention charges while also disrupting the consignee’s construction schedule.

Handling multiple oversized flat racks simultaneously at one of North America’s busiest ports is a significant logistical challenge. Every movement required careful coordination between the terminal, trucking companies, lifting equipment, and the final delivery schedule.

Falcon’s team also identified opportunities to improve transportation efficiency. Through optimized load planning, the original trucking requirement was reduced from 20 truck movements to only 16, lowering transportation costs without compromising safety or delivery timelines.

Most importantly, every delivery had to arrive during normal business hours and in the exact sequence requested by the consignee.

how falcon
Responded

From the beginning, Falcon developed a detailed execution plan covering every phase of the project.

Our project cargo team coordinated closely with ocean carriers, terminal operators, trucking partners, and the consignee to ensure equipment availability and minimize idle time throughout the operation.

Every stage of the transloading process was scheduled in advance, allowing all eight flat racks to be handled within just two days while completely avoiding detention charges.

Throughout execution, continuous communication between all parties allowed the team to respond quickly to operational requirements without disrupting the delivery schedule.

By optimizing truck utilization and carefully sequencing deliveries, Falcon reduced the total number of trucks required while maintaining full compliance with oversized transportation regulations and ensuring every component arrived safely.

The operation demonstrated the value of proactive planning, flexibility, and precise project coordination—qualities that define successful heavy-lift logistics.
